With the cost of a kitchen remodel being so high, it’s no wonder so many people are opting to paint rather than replace their kitchen cabinets! If your cabinets are still in good shape and you’re not ready to replace them but you’re dying to update the look of your kitchen, painting can be a fantastic option! Here are some of the questions we get asked most frequently about painting kitchen cabinets.
What is the process for painting cabinets?
There’s no one single way to paint cabinets. But the one step that is absolutely crucial is the prep work! For a durable paint job, this involves multiple stages of sanding, de-glossing, cleaning, and priming with a heavy duty primer. After their fully prepped, we’ve found that the best way to paint the doors and drawer faces is by painting them with a sprayer in our refinishing shop for a beautiful finish. The frames can be brushed or painted with a sprayer.
How long does it take for the paint to fully dry?
The paint dries on the surface very quickly (think hours). Once your doors and drawers are reinstalled they are dry to the touch and ready to be used! However, it takes up to a month for the paint to fully “cure”, or harden. We always recommend keeping lighter traffic those first couple of weeks and being mindful not to slam the doors or hit the cabinets with anything.
How durable are painted cabinets?
Once the paint on your cabinets fully cures, they are durable and very hard. Like all painted surfaces, they can be subject to wear and tear over time, depending upon how your household interacts with the cabinetry. A good thing to know is that any worn areas can be easily and quickly touched up down the road if need be.
How do I care for painted cabinets?
To clean painted cabinets you can simply wipe them with a damp cloth with a mild detergent if any.
